How We Can Be Of Service For Others Without Being Overwhelmed

This Sundays lesson  was on service to others. What is the first thing that comes into mind when you hear about giving service to others?

First of all, the best things about Monday, is that I get a chance to contemplate what we learn in church. How I start my Mondays is also what guides my way for the rest of the week.

My initial thought about service is that I can’t. Especially if I am so busy with 5 girls, plus homeschooling, plus not being financially able to. What do I have to offer?

And those initial thoughts are what brings me to blocking my channel from God to be of service to others.

I am here to tell you that not every service requires a meal from scratch, money or hours of your day. As we all know, every person has their own individual needs and sometimes those needs don’t have a cost.

Some of the smallest things for us can mean the world to someone else.

For instance,

  • A hug
  • A text message
  • A phone call to see how they’re doing
  • A smile
  • An e-mail

and if you can

  • A visit

We have all been there when we receive an unexpected call or text. The person on the other line was just doing their service, but it meant the world to you.

I know that for me, my obstacle for serving others is the thought of judgement. Not only judgement of others towards me or judgement towards the person in need of the service. The biggest judgement comes from myself to me.

  • “I don’t think that what I have to offer is enough.”
  • “I don’t even know what to say over the phone.”
  • “What if they don’t want to hear from me?”

Great things happen when we follow the inspiration to just make that call, visit, e-mail or text.

Finally, things are a lot easier to communicate with others. Yet, we do less of it. Your help, no matter how small, can go a long way. Most of all, to that person that comes to mind as you read this.

Share with me some of the ways that you help others. So, don’t forget to subscribe so that we can grow and learn from each other.
