What I Learned After My Trip To See My Grandmother

This month we had the grand oppurtunity to travel to Florida to visit my grandmother, my aunt and her family. It had been 7 years since the last time that I had seen them. So, taking this trip was a very emotional one for my mom and me.

Now, my grandmother is still able to do things on her own. She has a very sharp mind and boy can she move when the phone rings! I love that my grandmother was able to meet all of my children.

I have never been really close to my family. Usually do to me staying in my comfort zone and keeping to myself. Although it keeps me out of family drama, I realized that it also keeps me from the beauty of family.

When we arrived, it was so beautiful to see the joy in my grandmothers eyes. My mother, forget about it! She was overjoyed to see her mother and sister again. I saw the child in my mom shine through.

I now that I am using “amazing” so much, but it truly was amazing to see my mother, grandmother and aunt smile, laugh, hug and catch up.

After taking this trip, I realized just how much I have missed. Here, I have my 86 year old grandmother. Someone that can still have a full conversation. Someone with an amazing memory and stories.

Being with relatives can sometimes bring a headache, but taking the time to know them and spend time with them can make some of the best memories.

I learned that

  1. Spending time with family is more valuable than your comfort zone.
  2. Time flys by so fast, don’t miss out on the opportunities that count.
  3. The nostalgia of one person can be the a treasure for another.
  4. My children deserve the opportunity of family.
  5. Just because you’re 86 doesn’t mean you can’t run for the phone!

Sometimes family can be taken for granted. We can think that we still have tomorrow. My tomorrow became 7 years.

Family can sometimes come with drama, but your family is your village and your home.

I do want to make clear that I understand that some family members compromise your sanity and peace. It’s okay to avoid those family members.

But spending time with

  • that annoying cousin
  • or in-law
  • that sibling that “knows it all”
  • or the lecturing relatives…

I think you can handle that at least once a year.

I was able to to take this amazing picture
